EXAM PREPARATION / PRACTICE

Goethe A1 speaking: introductions, questions and requests

Introduce yourself, ask questions and make polite requests. Three audio examples and original practice cards help you prepare short conversations for Goethe A1 speaking. Say your own answers aloud throughout.

What does Goethe A1 speaking involve?

In the adult Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 exam, you introduce yourself, ask and answer everyday questions, and make requests. These exercises practise those functions; they are not a complete mock exam. Other A1 exams can have different instructions and structures.

1. Introductions: build your own answer

Prepare short sentences about your name, age, origin, home, languages, work and hobbies. Replace the example details with your own. Answer follow-up questions directly instead of restarting your whole introduction.

German transcript

Guten Tag. Ich heiße Samira Khan. Ich bin achtundzwanzig Jahre alt und komme aus Indien. Jetzt wohne ich in Berlin. Ich spreche Hindi, Englisch und ein bisschen Deutsch. Ich arbeite als Verkäuferin. In meiner Freizeit koche ich gern und höre Musik.

Name · Alter · Land · Wohnort · Sprachen · Beruf · Hobby

Stellen Sie sich vor. Buchstabieren Sie dann Ihren Nachnamen. Nennen Sie anschließend eine erfundene Telefonnummer.

First speak with keywords, then without the outline. Use invented phone numbers. This browser exercise does not record you. A clear sentence such as “Ich wohne in Köln” is more useful than a long sentence you cannot confidently finish.

2. Ask questions and give relevant answers

Audio example: breakfast

Was essen Sie gern zum Frühstück? Ich esse gern Brot und Käse. Trinken Sie morgens Kaffee? Nein, ich trinke Tee. Wann frühstücken Sie? Meistens um sieben Uhr.

3. Make and respond to polite requests

Formulieren Sie eine Bitte zu jedem Stichwort: Stift · Wasser · Tür schließen. Ihre Partnerin oder Ihr Partner reagiert. Wechseln Sie dann die Rollen.

“Können Sie mir bitte einen Stift geben?” requests an object. For an action, try “Können Sie bitte die Tür schließen?” Respond with “Ja, gern” or a brief polite explanation. Distinguish asking for information from asking someone to do something.

Which expression fits?

1. Sie möchten einen Stift bekommen.
Answer and explanation

Können Sie mir bitte einen Stift geben? — This politely requests an object.

2. Jemand fragt: „Wo wohnen Sie?“
Answer and explanation

Ich wohne in Hamburg. — “Wo” asks about a place, rather than age or language.

3. Sie möchten nach dem Hobby fragen.
Answer and explanation
