EXAM PREPARATION / PRACTICE

telc B1 language elements: practice with answers and explanations

Which word really fits the gap? Practise word order, prepositions and fixed expressions in two original texts. Every answer has an explanation so you can apply the rule to a new sentence.

What are Sprachbausteine in telc B1?

In the general-language Zertifikat Deutsch / telc Deutsch B1 exam, language elements accompany reading comprehension. You select words that fit the grammar and meaning of a text. The official tasks use different selection formats. Our shorter texts give three choices per gap: they train underlying skills rather than fully reproducing both official parts.

How to approach a gap-fill text

  1. Read the whole text first: who is writing, to whom and why?
  2. Look before and after the gap. Do you need a verb, preposition or linking word?
  3. Check word order and fixed expressions, rather than only translating.
  4. Read the full sentence again with your answer in place.

Text 1: Gemeinsam lernen

Liebe Mila,
[1] zwei Monaten besuche ich einen Deutschkurs. Der Kurs gefällt mir, [2] wir viel miteinander sprechen. [3] ich am Abend oft müde bin, mache ich meine Hausaufgaben. Am Samstag treffe ich mich [4] einer Freundin. Wir lernen zusammen für die Prüfung. Hast du Lust, mit uns zu üben? Ich freue mich [5] deine Antwort.
Liebe Grüße
Amir

Exercise 1: choose the correct word

1. [1] ___ zwei Monaten
Answer and explanation

Seit — “Seit” describes something starting in the past and continuing to the present; here it takes the dative plural.

2. [2] Der Kurs gefällt mir, ___ wir viel miteinander sprechen.
Answer and explanation

weil — “Weil” introduces the reason, with “sprechen” at the end of the subordinate clause.

3. [3] ___ ich oft müde bin, mache ich meine Hausaufgaben.
Answer and explanation

Obwohl — “Obwohl” expresses a contrast: Amir does the homework despite being tired.

4. [4] Ich treffe mich ___ einer Freundin.
Answer and explanation

mit — The expression is “sich mit jemandem treffen”. “Mit” takes the dative.

5. [5] Ich freue mich ___ deine Antwort.
Answer and explanation

auf — “Sich auf etwas freuen” refers here to looking forward to a future reply.

Text 2: Eine Anfrage

Sehr geehrte Frau Berger,
ich habe Ihre Anzeige gelesen und interessiere mich [1] den Abendkurs. Können Sie mir sagen, [2] der Kurs beginnt? Ich arbeite bis 17 Uhr, [3] suche ich einen späteren Termin. Außerdem möchte ich wissen, ob die Bücher im Preis enthalten [4]. Vielen Dank für Ihre [5].
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Amir Hassan

Exercise 2: check meaning and grammar

1. [1] Ich interessiere mich ___ den Abendkurs.
Answer and explanation

für — The fixed expression is “sich für etwas interessieren”.

2. [2] Können Sie mir sagen, ___ der Kurs beginnt?
Answer and explanation

wann — “Wann” asks about time. In this indirect question, “beginnt” goes at the end.

3. [3] Ich arbeite bis 17 Uhr, ___ suche ich einen späteren Termin.
Answer and explanation

deshalb — “Deshalb” introduces a consequence. The verb “suche” follows it, then the subject “ich”.

4. [4] … ob die Bücher im Preis enthalten ___.
Answer and explanation

sind — “Die Bücher” is plural, so the verb is “sind”. After “ob”, it goes at the end.

5. [5] Vielen Dank für Ihre ___.
Answer and explanation

Hilfe — This position needs the noun “die Hilfe”. German nouns start with a capital letter.

What to revise after a mistake

Group each mistake: linking word, fixed preposition, verb form or word class. Then write your own sentence, such as “Ich interessiere mich für Musik.” Replace the noun and read the new sentence aloud. A correct guess does not yet mean you know the rule.
