Which B2 exam is this exercise for?
This guide supports writing practice for the general-language telc Deutsch B2 exam. A complaint letter is one useful task type; do not prepare exclusively for this topic. The official telc page links practice tests and guidance on task types. B2 Beruf and nursing exams use different formats.
How to structure a complaint letter
- State the context: what did you book or buy, and when?
- Compare the promise with the experience: what was offered and what was missing?
- Explain the consequences and give examples.
- Request a reasonable solution and close politely.
Exercise: a disappointing photography course
Sie haben einen zweitägigen Fotokurs für 180 Euro besucht. Angeboten wurden eine kleine Gruppe, praktische Übungen im Freien und persönliches Feedback. Tatsächlich waren 24 Personen im Kurs. Die Außenübungen fielen ohne Ersatz aus und für Feedback blieb kaum Zeit.
Schreiben Sie an den Veranstalter. Beschreiben Sie Ihre Erwartungen und Erfahrungen, erklären Sie die Folgen und nennen Sie eine gewünschte Lösung. Wählen Sie für diese Lernübung etwa 150–180 Wörter; maßgeblich für Ihre echte Prüfung ist deren aktuelle Aufgabenstellung.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
am vergangenen Wochenende habe ich an Ihrem zweitägigen Fotokurs teilgenommen. Aufgrund Ihrer Anzeige hatte ich mich für dieses Angebot entschieden, weil ich meine Kamera in einer kleinen Gruppe besser kennenlernen wollte. Besonders wichtig waren mir die angekündigten Übungen im Freien und das persönliche Feedback.
Leider entsprach der Kurs in mehreren Punkten nicht der Beschreibung. Statt einer kleinen Gruppe waren 24 Personen anwesend. Deshalb konnte der Kursleiter nur wenige individuelle Fragen beantworten. Außerdem fanden die Außenübungen nicht statt. Eine Alternative wurde uns nicht angeboten. Das ist besonders ärgerlich, da ich gerade die praktische Anwendung üben wollte. Auch bei der abschließenden Besprechung blieb keine Zeit, meine eigenen Fotos gemeinsam anzusehen.
Für den Preis von 180 Euro hatte ich deutlich mehr erwartet. Ich bitte Sie daher um eine teilweise Rückerstattung der Kursgebühr. Alternativ wäre ich mit einem kostenlosen Praxistermin in einer kleinen Gruppe einverstanden. Bitte teilen Sie mir innerhalb von zwei Wochen mit, welche Lösung Sie anbieten können.

How the letter works: The opening establishes the booking and expectations. The second paragraph gives concrete problems and consequences. The closing requests a solution, offers an alternative and asks for a reply. The word range is a target for this exercise, not a statement of the current exam requirements.
Useful phrases with a clear purpose
- Anlass: „Ich wende mich an Sie, weil …“
- Erwartung: „Aufgrund Ihrer Beschreibung hatte ich erwartet, dass …“
- Problem: „Entgegen der Ankündigung …“ / „Leider musste ich feststellen, dass …“
- Folge: „Dies hatte zur Folge, dass …“
- Lösung: „Ich bitte Sie daher um …“ / „Alternativ wäre ich mit … einverstanden.“
Use a phrase only when it fits your meaning. Specific information is more helpful than a string of memorised expressions. Check verb position after “weil” and “dass”.
Revise instead of simply writing more
- Content: did I address every requested point?
- Coherence: did I explain why the problems mattered?
- Register: is my tone factual and formal?
- Language: did I check word order, verb forms and linking expressions?
