EXAM PREPARATION / PRACTICE

Goethe A1 writing practice: tasks and sample answers

A short message does not need to be complicated. Practise explaining a situation, giving specific information and making a polite request. These two original A1 writing exercises include sample answers and explanations.

What should you practise for Goethe A1 writing?

Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 assesses basic communication. For writing, practise personal details and short messages. The official Goethe page provides current exam training and the exact format. Our exercises supplement those materials; they do not reproduce a full exam.

A simple approach to a writing task

  1. Read the situation. Who are you writing to, and why?
  2. Identify each requested detail. Write a clear sentence addressing each point.
  3. Check the greeting, names, date or time, and a suitable closing.

Exercise 1: Miss a German class

Sie können am Dienstag nicht zum Deutschkurs kommen. Schreiben Sie Ihrer Lehrerin Frau Becker.

  • Warum können Sie nicht kommen?
  • Wann kommen Sie wieder?
  • Bitten Sie um die Hausaufgaben.

Liebe Frau Becker,

Samira

Why does it work? The appointment explains the absence. “Am Donnerstag” states when the learner will return. The request for homework is polite and specific. Simple sentences can cover every requested point.

Exercise 2: Invite a friend

Sie möchten Ihre Freundin Lena am Samstag zum Essen einladen. Schreiben Sie eine Nachricht.

  • Wann soll Lena kommen?
  • Was möchten Sie zusammen essen?
  • Bitten Sie Lena, etwas mitzubringen.

Liebe Lena,

hast du am Samstag Zeit? Komm bitte um 18 Uhr zu mir. Ich möchte mit dir Pizza essen. Kannst du einen Salat mitbringen? Ich freue mich auf dich!

Liebe Grüße
Alex

Notice the details: “Am Samstag” and “um 18 Uhr” specify the day and time. Pizza and salad address the remaining points. “Liebe Lena” suits a friend. Instead of memorising the whole answer, change the place, time and food and write a new message.

Common mistakes and a quick checklist

  • Missing a point: check off each item in the task.
  • Unclear time information: distinguish “am Montag” from “um 10 Uhr”.
  • A missing verb: “Ich komme am Donnerstag” needs the verb “komme”.
  • An unsuitable greeting: writing to a friend differs from writing to someone you do not know.
